Hello world!

Being a software developer (I am a freelancer hire me!) I got used to the built in complexity of the job. If you tell 5 developers to build you an app and compare the source codes, you will, probably, end up with 5 different source codes.

Like one of my former professors said (I am paraphrasing): “Software development is infinitely more complex than most other fields. Look at house building for example. You want to have a room here, you will need a beam. A beam is a beam no matter how you turn it. On the other hand, if you want to manipulate data, you will have numerous options and most of them will be valid”.

I love this kind of stuff. I love puzzles. I love brain teasers. I love anything that makes you think and get to the Aha moment. That’s why I always look for something new to do and challenge myself.

Over the last few years I have compiled a nice collection of board games and a lot more are on their way :)

While doing random stuff I started thinking about a game that I would love to play. Little by little the idea took form and now I want to document the process of creating my very own board game.

It will, probably, never get past a print out version but who knows. Maybe someone outside my circle of friends will play it as well :)

The theme

If you are familiar with World of Warcraft or any type of RPG, you will pretty quickly get the concept of this game.

The easiest way I can put it is Explore the world, gather XP, and kill the final boss.

Players will have the option to create their own world by choosing large tiles and placing them at the ends of previous tiles.

You will have the option to choose between a level 1, 2, and 3 tile. The higher the level, the more XP you will get but you will have to face tougher opponents.

Finishing a tile will also give you honor points equal to the tile level. Once you reach a certain amount of honor points the final boss launches an attack on you in order to prevent you from overthrowing him.

Tiles will have certain themes like dungeon, forest, wasteland, and mountain. Each terrain will give certain enemies ,which you will draw randomly, an advantage in that round. Kill them, gain XP, and move on.

Hero classes

So far there will be 5 different classes

  • Warrior - no nonsens guy who trusts his strength as much as his weapons

  • Mage - watch out! A powerful spell might come your way

  • Rogue - they are quick and deadly. You won’t see them until it’s too late

  • Cleric - their main goal is to keep you alive but they pack a punch as well

  • Ranger - just like the warrior, they trust their weapons - only from a littler farther away

Each of these classes will, so far, come in three different flavors or types. They will have slightly different abilities so that you can pick the one that best suits you.

First look at the heros

First look at the heros

Each of the heros will have three default attacks matching their type and players will have the option to buy more attacks by using the XP collected in previous rounds. They will have the option between three different strengths (medium, strong, powerful) of attacks. The stronger the attack the harder it is to execute it.

I guess that’s it for today!

Over the next few updates will dive into each class and their individual types. We will see each attack (and how they change over time). We will check out the fighting mechanic as well as how the enemies will attack you and what you can do about it.

Until then,
Happy gaming
