Road to Ironman - Week 10

Since week 9 was a recovery week there wasn't much to report but last week had plenty of excitements. I have completed my first brick workouts. Brick workouts are nothing more then doing two disciplines one after the other. In my case this meant riding bike for an hour which is then followed by a 30 minute run.

Why is it called brick workout? I have no idea! Maybe for the same reason crossfit isn't done in a gym but in a, wait for it, box. I think it just sounds better but honestly I don't care.

I am starting to get my first taste of what it takes to do multiple disciplines back to back instead of just one per day. The biggest problem wasn't getting of the bike and running for some time but my energy level after the bike. Since I pushed a nice pace in awful conditions (light rain, stronger winds) I got home pretty tired and didn't really bother to drink something but went straight to running. Since I usually can pull through a bike workout without any nutrition (it's getting colder so I am not sweating that much) I put the thought aside to have something to drink or have a small bite or two. Also I totally overdressed (I was wearing the same windproof stuff I wore on the bike) and felt quite soon that this isn't going to work out. That's why I kept the run a little short but, then again, I learned some things that will help me avoid mistakes in the future.

My swimming was again a little shorter since I was mostly focusing on form due to a very crowded pool (4 guys and me in one lane!!!). I hope that today things will be a little better because I hope to crack the Ironman distance (3.8 km) today or on the workout on Wednesday. Before I sign off I'll just, as usual, stick the latest numbers into a table :)

Distance Time Pace
Swim 4.5 km 1:25:00 h 18.9 min / km
Bike 87.24 km 3:44:40 h 2.55 min / km
Run 22.28 km 1:52:28 h 5.06 min / km

Distance Time
Swim 39.55 km 14:38:00 h
Bike 571.34 km 26:44:47 h
Run 154.82 km 13:12:10 h

Until next week, don't forget to be awesome :)
