After not being able to read the House of Leaves I decided I should read something else. House of Leaves seems to be a really cool book but there is a lot going on at the same time (the actual story, tons of footnotes and some thorough explanations about things connected with the story) I just felt I couldn’t keep up with the book. After work and training my mind isn’t as sharp as I want it to be sometimes and I just don’t want to rush through the book just to get it done before the end of the week.
That’s why I chose to read the last Grisham book I have on my shelf, The Runaway Jury. And this book is really something! The key players in this book aren’t the lawyers, murderers or judges but the jury. It’s about how they get selected, how they start listening to the arguments to finally create an opinion in favor for the plaintiff or defense. It’s also a story about corruption, fights and all other background things that are associated with a trial of a bigger scale. To make everything even more interesting John chose to add another twist into the story by adding Nicholas Easter, a mysterious person who managed to get himself selected as a juror and play a game of his own.
The story is a great presentation about how people who get some kind of power became targets even before they are selected on their position. How people who have a lot to lose will bend arms in order to get what they want. How people will do whatever it takes to get the verdict they desire.
I give this book a 10/10 and can say that along with The Firm and The Rainmaker this is in my opinion one of his best books.
I have now switched to something completely different. A friend of mine gave me a fantasy book by Terry Pratchett called Guards! Guards!. I am not (still) not sure if I am a fantasy guy (despite liking The Hobbit) so I guess I have to find out.
Until then don’t forget to be awesome
