Last week was all about sneaking around unnoticed…
Ken Follett put us with his book Hornet Flight in the middle of World War 2. It’s late June 1941 and Nazi Germany was at the peak of it’s strength. They have invaded Denmark which surrendered without a real fight which saved a lot of lives at that time because it would have been very difficult to battle such a power alone. The only battle on the Western Front was the battle between Germany and the United Kingdom with the UK having massive loses. Germany kept bombing them and destroying many cities while at the same time advancing east to battle Soviet Union.
An unlikely alliance was formed in which the UK tried to help the Soviets hold their position until the winter which will make it very hard for the Nazis to advance. They started a huge bombing campaign against Germany but suffered enormous losses even before they could reach enemy territory. They couldn’t figure out how the Germans knew about them approaching from hundreds of kilometers away.
They stumbled upon the answer partially by deciphering German communication and partially by the help of Harald Olufsen, an 18 years old engineering student. While going home he crossed a German base and discovered a strange rotating device. Later he drew the device to Poul Kirke, a Danish Army pilot who was a member of the Night Watch. They tried everything they could to help the Alliance end up victorious against the Nazis.
There were deaths and suicides along the way and a daredevil flight attempt from Denmark to the UK which had the purpose to turn the tide on the Western Front.
How everything turned out is again something you have to find out.
By the length of the review you can already see that I really enjoyed the book so there is no other conclusion but a 10/10 for this book.
Until next week, try to make a difference
