Book challenge, week 16

Last week I read another John Grisham book, A Painted House, where we follow a young kid named Luke Chandler.

After reading Calico Joe last week it was interesting to read about another kid who want to play baseball but this turned out to be just one of many stories which were covered in this book. It’s a story about the Chandler family which has a cotton farm in Arkansas and are looking for people to help them harvest the cotton. They hired a family, the Spruills, and a few Mexican people. They started working hard all day to earn something at the end, always worrying what the weather will bring tomorrow.

Luke fell in love with Tally, the Spruill’s only daughter which was 10 years older then him but he didn’t really care. Working every day under the hot sun turned out to be very hard for Luke so he was taking every opportunity to skip work even for a few hours.

The book describes the life of people in a rural society, their religion, habits and other things and really let’s you dive into the 50s and feel the warmth and smell the nature.

It’s not a classic Grisham book of legal battles but a really nice change of pace. I haven’t had much time during the week to read the book and “had to” read most of the book during the weekend which was great because I just kept turning pages in anticipation of what will happen next. Luke is a nice kid and I enjoy seeing the world through his childish eyes and read his thoughts which can make you smile a lot.

I give this book a 9/10 just because some parts were stretched a bit to long in my opinion. Other then that this book is again a recommendation

Until next week, keep smiling and make the best of every day
