Book challenge, week 15

More then a quarter through! This week it was again a book by Jonh Grisham. This time it’s Calico Joe.

We follow the life of Paul Tracey who dreams of becoming a baseball player just like his father Warren. Unfortunately for Paul he couldn’t really enjoy playing baseball because of his father who was more then a pain when he was around. He always pretended to know better then anyone else, he hit Paul from time to time, he was drinking and returning home late. All in all, he was a lousy father.

The last nail in the coffin for Paul’s baseball career was when his father intentionally hit a rookie with a beanball in the head just because he couldn’t handle this kid breaking all possible records in his first season. The hit to the head proved to be devastating and Joe Castle, Paul’s hero, never played baseball again.

Now as an adult Paul gets a call and learning that his father will soon die of cancer. His last mission was to force his father, to whom he hasn’t spoken for more then 20 years, to make peace with Joe before he dies.

How everything turns out is again something you will have to find out.

This book is really a nice read and although it’s not a typical Grisham legal thriller it deserves a 9/10.

One thing I like about the book is the foreword where John explains the game to someone who doesn’t know much about the sport. So if you are interested in how the game works you have one more reason to pick up this book

Happy reading and don’t forget to be awesome
