Another week another book! I have picked up a few more books of John Grisham. Last week it was The King of Torts.
It was a story about Clay Carter, a poorly-paid lawyer how works at the Office of the Public Defender. He wanted to quit over and over again while dreaming of a career for a big firm. He got another murder case in which a young person named Tequila Watson killed another but didn’t really know why. It turned out that Tequila was a drug addict who got clean while taking a drug called Tarvan. This drug works on most addicts but it has some side effects. In a few cases people who used Tarvan just felt the need to kill someone.
While working on this case Clay (not knowing about the drug so far) was approached by a guy who called himself Max Pace. He led him into the Tarvan secret and offered him to settle the case for the families of the 7 people who got killed by Tarvan users. He would earn one-third of what the final settlement would be. It turned out that he made 5 millions in just a few weeks while working on this kind of legal things. And just after the first shock another case was coming his way where he is going to earn even more money.
The King of Torts is an excellent example of what quickly earned (earned might be a bit far stretched here) money can do to people. Planes, boats, houses, offices with an enormous rent all seem to become normal everyday things. It’s a roller coaster in which many lawyers lose focus on important things.
How Clay will handle it is something what you have to find out for yourself. I give this book a 10/10 because it portraits greed in such a way that you can only hope it want happen to you.
Until next week, don’t forget to be awesome
